"La parete di fronte di questo luogo era tutta ricoperta da una selvaggia esposizione di randelli e lance mostruose. Alcune erano fittamente adorne di denti lucidi che parevano seghe d'avorio, altre impennacchiate di ciuffi di capelli umani; una era a forma di falce, con un gran manico che s'incurvava come lo spicchio prodotto nell'erba fresca da un falciatore dalle lunghe braccia. A guardarle venivano i brividi: ci si chiedeva quale mostruoso selvaggio e cannibale potesse mai uscire a mietere morte con un attrezzo così bestiale e raccapricciante. Mescolate con queste c'erano vecchie lance da balena arrugginite e ramponi tutti spezzati e sformati."  (cap. III, pag. 37)

"The opposite wall of this entry was hung all over with a heathenish array of monstrous clubs and lances. Some were thickly set with glittering teeth resembling ivory saws; others were tufted with knots of human hair; and one was sickle-shaped, with a vast handle sweeping round like the segment made in the new-mown grass by a long-armed mower. You shuddered as you gazed, and wondered what monstrous cannibal and savage could ever have gone a death-harvesting with such a hacking, horrifying implement.
