Nota: Inizialmente il piroscafo fu usato sui fiumi e i laghi, essendo troppo
rischioso l'utilizzo sulle lunghe distanze. Verso la metà dell'Ottocento
cominciarono ad apparire sul mare le prime navi con lo scafo in ferro in
sostituzione del legno (non adatto a sopportare le vibrazioni del motore) e con
le eliche al posto delle ruote (che non erano efficienti se il mare era
agitato).
Note: Initially,
the ship was used in the navigation on the lakes and on the rivers, being too
dangerous to use over long distances. In the mid-nineteenth century began to
appear the first ships of the sea with the hull iron in place of wood (not
suitable to withstand the vibration of the engine) and with propellers instead
of wheels (which were not efficient when the sea was agitated).
