“Essi rispecchiano le capitali selciate di Buffalo e Cleveland e villaggi Winnebago; vedono galleggiare il mercantile a vele quadre, l'incrociatore ausiliario, il piroscafo e la canoa di betulla; sono spazzati da rovinosi groppi boreali, terribili come ogni tempesta che flagelli acque salse; e sanno cos'è un naufragio, perché fuori vista da terra, sebbene in mezzo al continente, hanno sommerso tante e tante navi notturne con tutti i loro equipaggi urlanti.”  (cap.
