La raffineria

“La raffineria è impiantata fra il trinchetto e il maestro, che è la parte più spaziosa del ponte. Le tavole sottostanti sono di una robustezza speciale, adatte a sostenere il peso di una massa quasi compatta di mattoni e di calce, che misura circa dieci piedi per otto, e cinque d'altezza. […] Sollevando questo boccaporto si scoprono le grandi marmitte, due di numero, e ciascuna della capacità di parecchie botti.” (cap. XCVI, pag. 507) 

“The try-works are planted between the foremast and mainmast, the most roomy part of the deck. The timbers beneath are of a peculiar strength, fitted to sustain the weight of an almost solid mass of brick and mortar, some ten feet by eight square, and five in height. 2. ad essi viene legato un grande gancio da grasso
3. viene praticato un buco nel corpo della balena
4. viene inserito il gancio nel buco
5. i marinai girano l'argano
6. viene staccata una striscia di grasso e tirata fino a che non raggiunge i paranchi
7. il grasso asportato viene fatto scendere nel boccaporto principale e collocato nella "camera del grasso"

Nota: la pece veniva (e viene tuttora) usata per impermeabilizzare lo scafo delle imbarcazioni in legno attraverso una tecnica chiamata calafataggio.
