“Mentre lavorava così, la pesante lampada di peltro sospesa con catene sulla sua testa oscillava continuamente al muoversi della nave, e di continuo sulla fronte segnata di rughe gli passavano sprazzi di luce e righe d'ombra, tanto che quasi pareva che una matita invisibile, mentre Achab segnava linee e rotte sulle carte gualcite, gli andasse tracciando anch'essa linee e rotte sulla carta profondamente incisa della fronte.” (cap. • Nota: Il peltro è una lega composta principalmente di stagno (almeno il 90%), con l'aggiunta di altri metalli (rame, bismuto e antimonio). Anticamente, secondo la qualità e l'uso previsto, poteva contenere fino al 15% di piombo. Oggi l’uso del piombo è vietato a causa della sua tossicità. 

 Note: the pewter is an alloy composed mainly of tin (at least 90%), with the addition of other metals (for example: copper, bismuth and antimony). In ancient times, according to the quality and intended use, could contain up to 15% lead. Today the use of lead is banned because of its toxicity.
