Lampada o lucerna

(cap. XLIV, pag. 249)
“While thus employed, the heavy pewter lamp suspended in chains over his head, continually rocked with the motion of the ship, and for ever threw shifting gleams and shadows of lines upon his wrinkled brow, till it almost seemed that while he himself was marking out lines and courses on the wrinkled charts, some invisible pencil was also tracing lines and courses upon the deeply marked chart of his forehead.”                         (cap. XLIV, pag. 249)

Lampada o lucerna/Oil lamp

Note: the lamp cited is an oil lamp that is to say the fuel is oil.

Note: the pewter is an alloy composed mainly of tin (at least 90%), with the addition of other metals (for example: copper, bismuth and antimony). In ancient times, according to the quality and intended use, could contain up to 15% lead. Today the use of lead is banned because of its toxicity.

(cap. XLIV, pag. 248)
“At intervals, he would refer to piles of old log-books beside him, wherein were set down the seasons and places in which, on various former voyages of various ships, sperm whales had been captured or seen.”            (cap. XLIV, pag. 248)

Carte nautiche

(cap. XLIV, pag. 248)
“Had you followed Captain Ahab down into his cabin after the squall that took place on the night succeeding that wild ratification of his purpose with his crew, you would have seen him go to a locker in the transom, and bringing out a large wrinkled roll of yellowish sea charts, spread them before him on his screwed-down table.” (cap. XLIV, pag. 248)

Bussola

(cap. XXXV, pag. 201)

“[…] but though he so enlarges upon many of these, and though he treats us to a very scientific account of his experiments in this crow's-nest, with a small compass he kept there for the purpose of counteracting the errors resulting from what is called the "local attraction" of all binnacle magnets; an error ascribable to the horizontal vicinity of the iron in the ship's planks, and in the Glacier's case, perhaps, to there having been so many broken-down blacksmiths among her crew […].”                             (cap. XXXV, pag. 201)

Fucile

(cap. XXXV, pag. 201)

“When Captain Sleet in person stood his mast-head in this crow's-nest of his, he tells us that he always had a rifle with him (also fixed in the rack), together with a powder flask and shot, for the purpose of popping off the stray narwhales, or vagrant sea unicorns infesting those waters […].”  (cap. XXXV, pag. 201)

Cannocchiale

(cap. XXXV, pag. 201)

“On the after side, or side next the stern of the ship, is a comfortable seat, with a locker underneath for umbrellas, comforters, and coats. In front is a leather rack, in which to keep your speaking trumpet, pipe, telescope, and other nautical conveniences.” (cap. XXXV, pag. 201)

Astrolabio

(cap. XXXIV, pag. 190)
“It is noon; and Dough-Boy, the steward, thrusting his pale loaf-of-bread face from the cabin-scuttle, announces dinner to his lord and master; who, sitting in the lee quarter-boat, has just been taking an observation of the sun; and is now mutely reckoning the latitude on the smooth, medallion-shaped tablet, reserved for that daily purpose on the upper part of his ivory leg.”  (cap. XXXIV, pag. 190)
